My Backyard ...Looks Like Fall is Coming!

As many of you know I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia right on the historical Carolina Trail. Daniel Boone himself has traveled down this way and probably even walked through what is now my backyard. It has been a tough adjustment for me moving here cause I really loved Vermont but one thing that keeps me going and inspires me is looking out my windows to this wonderful site! I love birds so I have 5-6 bird feeders scattered about. This area is historically protected so the wildlife is in abundance. On any given morning I can see and count 30-40 different species of birds.

The first winter I was here I made friends with a very exuberant cardinal. He would always let me know when my feeder (the one he preferred) was empty by tapping on my kitchen window. We named him Milo. He was the inspiration for my cardinal pattern that year. The birds give me a sense of belonging to the wilderness and the earth. We have made friends with many so that each time they visit they get a bit more friendly. Now that I have a new camera I am hoping to master all the gizmos on it and introduce you to my backyard with pictures!

Milo is available as an e-pattern or paper pattern from my website: www.softinthehead.com

Pam, your backyard looks wonderful...I too love the birds..we have one woodpecker that has been here for 3 years now...we've named him Ben. He was the only one of his kind here the first two winters...I guess they are very rare to Vermont but are making a comeback. Anyway...this summer..he had a family here...a mate and two babies..he would bring them to our feeders. It is wonderful. We are not suppose to keep our feeders full during the summer here as we have bear problems...but I actually kept them full this year..and didn't have a problem at all.

I will talk to you this evening...TaTa...

Hugs,
doreen

Love the story of Milo! Your view is beautiful Pam, though I may be a bit biased, being a neighbor of yours from the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee. Vermont is high on my wish list of places to visit. I'm hoping it will be in the near future...

Pam, When I saw the picture of your backyard and the piece about Daniel Boone I had to have my husband come and read it,he loves history and he still watches that show. He says it reminds him of when he was young. We are going to miss our bird feeders when we go south because as you know here birds watching is what makes the winters special. The condo though is backed up to the marsh so we will still beable to view the wildlife. I will miss my family very much because they are my life but we are excited to take on this new chapter in our lives. Best to you always Donna
